#ICYMI | Pacific Islands make definitive step toward banning fossil fuels

Following a meeting on the Solomon Islands last week, leaders of 14 Pacific Island nations are considering the first ever international treaty banning fossil fuels. Many of the nations that make up the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) will be directly impacted by the effects of climate change and are thus seeking to put renewable energy targets in place while phasing out coal. The proposed agreement was devised by the Pacific Island Climate Action Network, which presented the treaty to leaders as a way for the Pacific region to implement last year’s COP21 agreement . PIDF Climate Change Adviser Mahendra Kumar told The Guardian that the treaty was welcomed by the Pacific Island leaders.
