During Thursday's morning plenary at the National Solar Conference, three leading experts summarized recent progress in fast-growing renewable energy technologies. Windpower: Dr. James Lyons, chief technical officer of Novus Energy Partners, and former chief engineer at General Electric's Research and Development Center, described the state of progress in wind energy. Now a mainstream energy technology, wind saw installation of 200 gigawatts worldwide in 2010. Lyons predicts 15 to 20 percent annual growth indefinitely. Wind turbines emplaced across three to four percent of U.S. land area could provide 20 percent of the nation's electric power. The development would require 12,650 miles of new transmission lines. Wind turbine efficiency rises with rotor diameter and tower height, so a new generation of turbines now in test run 5 to 10 MW in capacity. Key design consideratio...
