Renewables Are Customizing PPAs for Mining Industry, But More Dialogue Necessary

Goldcorp’s Chilean operations has dedicated time and effort to exploring renewable energy for its 200 MW El Morro project, which has encountered delays because the company’s environmental permit was challenged before the Supreme Court and the company lost. Energy Manager Rodrigo Diaz has conducted several studies to explore the feasibility of renewable energy at El Morro. Diaz is eager to use renewable energy to conform with GoldCorp’s energy policy, as well as Chilean regulations, which dictate that 10 percent of energy should come from renewable sources. “If I sign a PPA [power purchase agreement] with a coal power producer, the producer has to manage to give me 10 percent of renewables,” he explains.
