U.S. DOE awards USD 10 million for solar CSP energy storage projects

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded USD 10 million to six new research and development (R&D) projects to advanced thermochemical energy storage technology for concentrating solar power (CSP) projects. Six national laboratories and colleges will pursue approaches using different materials and technologies under the DOE's CSP: ELEMENTS program. The largest award at USD 3.45 million went to Sandia National Laboratory (Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.) to design a system to store the energy from sunlight in the mineral perovskite. “By improving energy storage technologies for concentrating solar power systems, we can enhance our ability to provide clean and reliable solar power, even when the sun is not shining,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. Other recipients of awards are the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, University of California Los Angeles, Colo...
