GTM: Very large price variation across markets, rising prices for solar PV modules

GTM Research (Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.) has released results from a new study which finds variations up to USD 0.25 per watt in the price of Chinese-made solar photovoltaic (PV) modules in different nations, as prices generally rise. The company's “Global PV Price Outlook: Q2 2014” reports that average selling prices increased around 14% year-over-year to USD 0.70 per watt in the first quarter of 2014. However, this represents an average module price of USD 0.80 in Japan and USD 0.55 in Chile. GTM Research notes the role of demand growth in China in improving the supply-demand balance, and also describes a “fitter, leaner supply chain” in the industry. Chinese PV module prices to rise above USD 0.75 per watt GTM Research expect prices to continue to rise, with Taiwanese PV cell costs serving as the main driver for Chinese PV module prices in the first half of 2014.
