People around the world have begun to steadily come on board with the idea of solar as a viable source of energy. Yet, a large contingent remains that believes the technology has not matured to the point that it can contend with more traditional sources of energy like fossil fuels, nuclear power or even larger-scale renewables like wind and hydroelectricity. Tom Murphy, an associate professor of physics at the University of California at San Diego , illustrates that solar power actually compares more favorably with these power sources than many people realize. The first point is to establish the standard efficiencies available for photovoltaic solar installations. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory reports that solar cells have passed the 40 percent threshold in some research labs...
