Why Climate Change is Much Bigger Than The Debt Ceiling

All other things being equal, I’m sure our general long-term economic trajectory would continue on upward. But global warming is different. It marries economic failure to degradation of our basic life support system. What is peaking is not merely this or that resource, but earth’s ability to absorb the pressures we’re putting on it. The economic impacts of unchecked climate change are huge enough that the combination of economic and ecological collapse may, sooner than we like to think, surpass civilization’s ability to compensate. This means that, unlike with a recession or depression that may result from a debt ceiling impasse or a housing bubble, civilization itself may fail. The Royal Society this year published a report wherein they conclude that on our current emissions path – not by any means the worst case scenario, but just current business – earth will warm seven...
