BMW has created a new production process for carbon fibre reinforced plastic components in the automotive industry that can help sports cars achieve a weight-to-power ratio of 7.7lbs/hp. As part of the M Night Event, BMW unveiled the BMW M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology) with the bonnet of the car and the bucket seats for the driver and front passenger all made from a cellular carbon honeycomb produced in a globally unique process for the manufacture of body components for the battery electric BMW i3 and the plug-in hybrid BMW i8. The new models will enter volume production in 2013 and will also come with the electric and BMW ActiveHybrid drive system technology. As for the vehicle itself, the BMW M3 CRT is the latest in a series of high performance sports cars that have been optimised with lightweight design.
