Nissan is to sell a lower-price version of its LEAF electric car in a bid to boost sales, the Financial Times reports this morning. The Japanese carmaker has sold less than 12,000 in the first half of this year, leaving it well below its target for 40,000 cars for the full year. While that’s disappointing, it does represent an 11 per cent increase on the year before, Andy Palmer, Nissan ’s executive vice-president, told the FT.com . The carmaker is not the only one to find sales of electric cars are below projections. To help clear current stock, Nissan is already discounting LEAF models in the US, as is its rival, Chevrolet, with its range-extended Volt car. Nissan says sales of the LEAF are being hindered by the slow deployment of recharging infrastructure and a strong yen.
