Ford makes huge fuel efficiency gain with car bonnet The car bonnet (known elsewhere as the car hood) may not seem like an obvious area of a vehicle to target when looking to reduce fuel consumption. However, Ford believes it has made a significant breakthrough with its latest offering. As part of the Composites Europe event, which took place in Dusseldorf, Germany, Ford revealed a carbon fibre reinforced plastic bonnet – which weighs 50 per cent less than a standard steel version. Production time is also said to be fast enough for it to be involved on a traditional production line. Carbon fibre is said to be five times stronger than steel; twice as stiff; and just one third of the weight. Ford has plans to introduce a number of advanced materials to its vehicles, including carbon fibre, and hopes that collectively they can cut the weight of its vehicles by 750lbs before t...
