Paris Motor Show 2012: Review

New car sales have reached a 17-year low in Europe. Even the all-conquering premium brands are now feeling the effects, with Mercedes -Benz warning of sales slowdowns and Porsche cutting back on investment in new cars. Even Volkswagen is starting to feel the chill and, for firms such as Fiat and Peugeot Citroen, events are bordering on cataclysmic. Each Peugeot-Citroen car sold loses money. Fiat has reduced investment in new models by €500m this year – and even that won’t be enough to stem the losses it’s going to make. Volkswagen has warned it wouldn’t be surprised if a European carmaker actually went bankrupt, and said state assistance for some brands is essential. Yes, things are tough out there.
