Despite living in the shadow of electric cars, it seems the future is bright for fuel cell vehicles: at least if the UK’s Carbon Trust is to be believed. According to a new report it suggests that fuel cell electric vehicles could account for as much as 30 per cent of the mid-sized car market by 2050 – as long as there is a continued focus on technology innovation and a drive to reduce costs. It focuses on the potential for technology from UK companies to slowly reduce the price of fuel cell cars while also increasing consumer uptake. It suggests that polymer fuel cell technology will cost around $49/kW when manufactured in a mass scale of around 500,000 units per year: but to be competitive with combustion engines, this would need to be reduced to $36/kW.
