Fuel cell cars may be struggling to get out of the starting blocks, but the stationary fuel cell market is enjoying rapid growth. The market experienced 60 per cent year on year growth in unit shipments between 2009 and 2010, according to a report by Pike Research – and now the company is expecting that it will surpass 1.2million units annually by 2017. The report focuses on: combined heat and power for residential and commercial; backup and prime power for mobile base stations; and electricity generators for commercial and residential use. It is expected that by the end of the forecast period, these applications will make up an annual market value of $9.5billion.
