In a country where infrastructure is sorely lacking and the gap between price tag and pocketbook can seem monumental, the government of India has nonetheless approved a $4.13 billion (230 billion rupee) plan to ignite electric and hybrid vehicle manufacture over the next eight years in an attempt to have 6 million such vehicles on the road as early as 2020. About 4 to 5 million of those are expected to be of the two-wheeled variety. The electric and hybrid car industry in India has been underdeveloped to date, with the focus instead going to low-emission cars, due primarily to high technology costs and an infrastructure that has remained lacking. India's goal-setting to produce 6 million green vehicles by 2020 comes on the heels of China's announced intention to have 500,000 electric and hybrid cars hitting its roads by 2015.
