While at a campaign event in Ames, Iowa, Aug. 28, President Obama revealed new fuel standards that will improve fuel economy the equivalent of 54.5 mpg for both cars and light-duty trucks by the time model years 2025 roll into the showroom. While the announcement was received with mixed emotions by the auto industry, consumers and environmental groups are looking at savings at the pump as well as reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Estimates are the new standards will reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a point roughly equal to a current year's worth of emissions from all cars around the globe, according to the President's comments. The Union of Concerned Scientists claim the new standards will save consumers about $8,000 over the lifetime of the new 2025 vehicles and reduce global warming emissions by a staggering 270 million metric tons in 2030.
