Toyota to participate in smart grid project

In an effort to create an optimised charging scheme, Toyota has decided to participate in a smart grid project that will kick off in 2013 and run until the end of the year. It will team up with Duke Energy and Energy Systems Network in Indiana and aim to equalise day and night load on the electric power grid thanks to a demand response system. This will be based on communication standards that have been developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers and that will provide digital communication between utility companies and vehicles. It is also hoped that the project will help to develop a scheme to manage charging with a variable toll system. In addition, it is set to take advantage of advanced technologies in an effort to give users the ability to create their own personal charging strategy – for example, so that they can set timers to charge during off-peak periods and ...
