Source of electric car fire revealed

Remember earlier this year when a high-speed crash involving an all-electric BYD e6 electric taxi that burst into flames prompted safety concerns about electric vehicles (see article )? Well now the reasons for that fire have been revealed. An investigation shows that electric arcs, caused by short circuiting of the high voltage lines in the distribution box had ignited combustible material in the vehicle: including part of the power batteries and the interior materials. The crash saw a Nissan GT-R collide with a BYD e6 electric taxi (pictured) – which then collided with a separate petrol-powered taxi. The e6 hit a tree and promptly burst into flames, with its three occupants killed during the crash.
