You make an interesting point. The 101 year old gentlemen and his wife grew up in an era, which I would say went from the 1920s to the 1960s, where technological progress was generally considered as a overwhelmingly positive thing and eagerly anticipated. There was certainly an optimism that the future was going to be a better place than the present when you look at, say, coverage of the 1939 World's Fair that no longer widely exists. While I think it is ultimately better to have a balanced view of the upsides and downsides of what used to be called "progress", I do think the general pessimism about the future does hold us back from trying to undertake the big things that we need to do to continue moving towards that better tomorrow.
