It is now the world’s largest automotive market: and China is keen to turn its roads green having revealed a plan to develop the new energy vehicle industry in the country. The China State Council has posted on its website that it has a target of producing 500,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles by 2015; with the aim of growing output to two million units by 2020. It also wants cumulative production and sales of new energy vehicles (pictured) – which will also include fuel cell cars – to reach five million vehicles by that time. China has been taking steps towards increasing its energy saving technologies in recent years by implementing a fiscal policy that encourages purchases of small cars; and with passenger fuel consumption limits.
