BMW ’s latest hybrid car is ready to be launched – and will first arrive in US showrooms this autumn. With a twin-power turbo 3.0litre engine inline six-cylinder engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as an electric motor powered by lithium-ion batteries, the new BMW ActiveHybrid 3 (pictured) is set to produce 335hp with 450Nm of torque – an increase of 13 per cent and 11 per cent respectively. Indeed the electric motor is capable of powering the vehicle alone for distances up to 2.5miles and speeds up to 45mph. When more throttle is applied however, the internal combustion engine kicks in – while the electric motor acts as a generator and recuperates kinetic energy during braking, which is used to charge the battery.
