New carbon solar cells help capture more light: The use of solar panels has grown phenomenally thanks to the dev...

The use of solar panels has grown phenomenally thanks to the development of compact and efficient new solar systems, but the next generation could be even better. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a new kind of solar cell that can use almost the entire range of the sunlight’s energy to generate electricity. Current-generation silicon-based solar cells are unable to harness the near-infrared region of the light spectrum. That’s a big limitation to solar generation as about 40 per cent of the solar energy reaching Earth’s surface lies in this area.
