Electric cars versus conventional cars: which costs more? via @zite. If you drive a lot of miles the EV wins.

While electric cars are in their infancy and battery prices are high, their price tag tends to be much steeper than equivalent petrol and diesel cars. However, could they save you money over the vehicle’s lifetime? According to a report from the International Transport Forum (logo, pictured), the answer is “yes” and “no”: depending on how far you will drive the vehicle. It finds that electric cars currently cost €4,000-€5,000 more to their owners over the vehicle’s lifetime in a “typical” scenario, but could save drivers money if they drive further. As part of its analysis entitled Electric Cars: Ready for prime time? it finds that societal costs for electric cars and electric vans range from €7,000-€12,000 higher than fossil fuelled vehicles.
