Study: Lengthening semi trucks could reduce emissions

Weight reduction and aerodynamic improvements are standard fare in the trucking world. They figured out long ago that every pound they take out of the truck and trailer is another pound they can haul in cargo. (trucks are regulated by gross weight, not cargo) Aluminum framed, composite sided trailers and aluminum and composite bodied trucks are the norm. Fuel is the primary operating cost for a truck so operators are very sensitive to fuel efficiency. Notice all the side skirts you are seeing on trailers these days. Over the course of a million miles a half mpg could mean 12,000 gallons less fuel used. This is also one reason most large fleets are equipped with satellite tracking and control computers that allow them to regulate the speed the trucks are operated at and even study which routes deliver the best efficiency for a given delivery time.
