Edmonton To Consider Ice Skating Highway For Winter Commutes

Given that hockey is one of Canada’s two national sports (the other being lacrosse) and a constant source of national pride, there’s no shortage of skates to go around. For his master thesis at the University of British Columbia, Matt Gibbs proposed the Freezeway in an effort “to make winter cities more livable, in particular how can we diversify transportation options, focus on active transportation, as well as social activity.” Gibbs got the inspiration for the Freezeway after reading about a city counciler’s proposal to break open fire hydrants and let the roads freeze, allowing people to skate to work.
