Watch maker Swatch is planning to produce a hydrogen-powered car, according to press reports from Germany. In an interview with newspaper NZZ am Sonntag , the company’s chief executive Nick Hayek said: "We already have a test-car with a fuel cell. Liquid hydrogen and oxygen are used as fuel, producing very efficient combustion.” The Swiss firm’s subsidiary, Belenos has built a prototype called ELV2 and is currently testing the model. However , don’t get excited just yet, the model’s production is not yet secure. "What we don’t know is whether it would be cost-efficient to build," Hayek explained. The fuel-cell vehicle is not the firm’s first attempt at car production. In 1997, it teamed up with Daimler to build the two-seat smart car, though the firm later sold its shares to the car giant.
