Volvo tests Flybrid KERS technology

Volvo Car Group's engineering company, Flybrid Automotive, has been testing a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) on passenger cars in the UK. Volvo says that the system is capable of cutting fuel consumption by 25% while offering 80 extra horsepower. The tests are part of a joint venture between Volvo, the Swedish government and UK-based Flybrid Automotive and forms part of Volvo's Drive-E powertrain research. In the tests, the Flybrid KERS technology is mounted to the rear axle of a front wheel drive S60, and uses the 'waste' heat energy created during braking to spin a carbon fibre flywheel at up to 60,000rpm. The kinetic energy of the flywheel is then transferred back to the rear axle when the car moves off again, providing extra power and taking load off the engine.
