Air pollution was responsible for no less than seven million deaths around the world in 2012 – representing one in eight of all global deaths – according to the latest estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO). This is more than double the previous estimates and confirms air pollution as the world’s biggest, single environmental health risk. The latest data also provides prove of a strong link between air pollution both indoors and outdoors and cardiovascular diseases such as stroke and ischaemic heart disease as well as the link between air pollution and cancer. These health risks are in addition to the role it plays in the development of respiratory diseases including respiratory infections and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.
