European 95g/km CO2 fuel economy standard delayed to 2021 #greenenergy

The European Parliament has agreed to delay the introduction of a 95g/km CO2 fleet average standard until 2021, following intense lobbying from the car industry. Originally the 95g/km target was expected to be enforced by 2020, but will now be in place for a year later. The delay to the legislation was forced by after a last-minute intervention by the German government, in support of its premium carmakers BMW and Daimler, according to the environmental NGO, Transport & Environment (T&E). It means that only 95 per cent of new cars will meet the 95g/km target in 2020, effectively weakening the target by around 3g/km. In addition, the revised agreement offers more leeway on CO2 emissions to carmakers in return for producing electric and other zero emission cars; known as ‘supercredits’.
