#electricvehicle Read This: 'Fee per ton mile' latest idea to combat declining gas tax rev

The cost to construct one mile of freeway with 4 lanes each way in the 70's was proverbial ' $1million dollar mile.' By the 80's, that cost has escalated to $10million dollars. In the 90's through the 2000's, that same stretch of highway costs nearly $50million. Today, it's over $100 million. The primary reason is that government highway construction contracts include a "Prevailing Wage" clause, meaning paying labor prices established by the labor unions. And those prices do not include the cost arising from bloated bureaucratic state transportation agencies. When the highway construction industry is exempt from the free market, there is no market forces to control the cost. Contrary to the reports funded by special interest groups, namely the highway construction trade groups, collection of gasoline tax has increased due to larger number of vehicles and near record number...
