Those clever minds at the University of Oregon have made a potentially significant breakthrough for hydrogen storage – that could yet influence the fuel cell cars of the future. They have developed a boron-nitrogen-based liquid-phase storage material for hydrogen that works at room temperature. It is both air and moisture stable; and releases H2 controllably and cleanly. According to a paper published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society , the development of a liquid-phase hydrogen storage material has the potential to take advantage of existing liquid-based distribution infrastructure. With the US having 150,000miles of pipeline dedicated to delivering petrol products, the transition to hydrogen based energy would be greatly facilitated if it can take advantage of existing liquid based distribution channels including pipelines and tankers, as well as retail out...
