Wondering why car manufacturers are turning away from high strength steel and looking towards aluminium for body construction? Look no further than the massive reduction in lifecycle energy consumption. According to a study by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, aluminium intensive vehicles can reduce lifetime energy consumption by 32 per cent compared to a typical vehicle that uses traditional or high-strength steel. In addition, CO2 emissions can be reduced by as much as 29 per cent. The study featured a full cradle-to-grave analysis of three modelled vehicle types, including: a lightweight steel vehicle; an aluminium intensive vehicle; and a baseline steel vehicle.
