Tuesday 10 September, 2013. The Green Piece Column. In Europe, the warm and familiar B-segment, also known as the supermini sector- is one of the car industry’s biggest. While in the US, vehicles tend to be bigger and heavier, in Europe, crowded cities and high fuel prices mean we love this small car sector. But how and when did we fall in love with the supermini? I reckon we can trace it as far back as some of the true classics; the first generation the original Mini first produced in 1959, Ford Fiesta launched in 1976, the Austin Metro launched in 1980, which made motoring increasingly affordable for all families and not just the wealthy elite. Oil shortages in the 1970s helped seal our love for the supermini as people shunned the idea of opting for bigger, fuel-hungrier vehicles.
