Election 2017: Focus on efficiency not price caps, say campaigners

"Energy tariffs faced by vulnerable people are a legitimate concern, but reaching for a price cap when better tools are available is, at best, a partial answer," Greenpeace chief scientist Dr Doug Parr said in a statement. "It has long been accepted that better energy efficiency is the cheapest way to cut bills, yet programmes to make homes warmer and healthier have fallen to their lowest levels in many years under Conservative Prime Ministers. Governments will always reach for populist policies, that grab headlines, but they should not do so at the expense of better, deeper solutions, which would really make people's lives better."
