HSBC tightens deforestation policy in bid to cool public anger over Greenpeace allegations

HSBC has today adopted a ‘No Deforestation, No Peat and No Exploitation' policy following a high-profile investigation by Greenpeace in which the environmental charity alleged the bank has been financing palm oil companies with links to deforestation. In a statement issued by the bank today, HSBC chief executive Stuart Gulliver said the bank has "no interest" in financing illegal operations including unlawful rainforest clearance, and said he had personally met with Greenpeace to discuss the allegations.
