Clean & Green or Dirty Business? 5 Corporate Greenwashing Tricks to Watch Out For:

This year, The Body Shop unveiled its much praised “three-minute shower” campaign, complete with a new line of shower gels (containing organic ingredients and bottled in recycled plastic, of course) to complement such quick cleaning. But upon closer inspection, those organic ingredients are things like Guatemalan aloe vera. I imagine it takes longer than three minutes to wash the carbon from a foot using a ingredients shipped from a foreign country and packaged in industrially processed (albeit recycled) plastic. And do you think the shower gel actually makes it possible for us to shower more quickly, or could we achieve the same goal with simple soap? When you consider these angles, this “environmental” program is perhaps more a marketing strategy than a green initiative. The same argument could be made about companies encouraging consumers to buy reusable bags and lunchb...
