Recently President Obama pledged to reduce our oil imports by one-third by 2025. Setting strong vehicle efficiency and emissions standards is the most effective, common-sense step we can take to reduce our dependence on oil. Strong pollution and vehicle efficiency standards that deliver at least 60 miles per gallon by 2025 would significantly reduce our dependence on oil, save consumers money at the pump and use American innovation to help our auto industry compete and thrive in a global marketplace. The difference between the strongest and weakest standards you are considering would cost Americans $370 billion at the pump (with most of the money ending up in foreign hands), and add twice as much global warming pollution to the atmosphere.
