Kevin Crosby, a special-education teacher at Independence High School in Bakersfield, Calif., hit on the idea early in the school year. Why not try to get about six of the teen-agers in his class focused on a solar energy project — something that would allow them to build and operate small solar-powered machines? The effort would allow the students, who are autistic, to acquire a variety of skills, he reasoned, and arid Bakersfield has sun in abundance. The cascade of results far exceeded his expectations. First, the students were fascinated. Although mostly past the age where Legos have any allure, they eagerly collaborated to build a solar-powered Lego Ferris wheel, a solar-powered Lego crane and a variety of other small machines, all hooked up to solar panel arrays slightly larger than a credit card.
