If there is one institution most sacred to the right it is the institution of heterosexual marriage. Defending it against the onslaught of gay rights activists and unmarried cohabitants is now neck-and-neck with the eradicating reproductive health rights as foundational ideology for just about anyone seeking office as a Republican. It's ironic then that one of the most important Supreme Court cases of our time, and the one that held up marital privacy as sacred and protected from governmental intrusion, is the same case under ideological attack by the right because of those very freedoms it enshrined. Griswold v. Connecticut involved a Connecticut law that outlawed the use of contraception of any kind for any person. First passed in 1879, the statute faced early challenges that failed because the parties either lacked standing or their challenges were not ripe for adjudica...
