German cabinet backs nuclear scrappage plans

Germany's Federal Cabinet has today backed plans to gradually shut down all 17 of the country's nuclear power plants by 2022 and accelerate investment in renewable energy supplies, in response to Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster. The cabinet today approved draft legislation announced by Chancellor Angela Merkel last week to amend the Atomic Energy Act and adopt the Renewable Energy Law.
