I think it's also important to note that many of the particular challenges - and solutions - will vary regionally. For example, the Bonneville Power Administration's Wind Integration Study speaks to the opportunities and challenges of using Hydro as a dispatchable resource to balance the intermittancy issues of wind. Some months it works marvelously, other months (like now) the hydro plants must run at 100% to prevent killing the salmon through over-aeration. Pumped Hydro is an amazing resource which is much needed but is only appropriate for certain locations. My understanding is the one of the ways that Germany is looking to get to their goals is through the construction of High Voltage DC transmission lines to Norway where they will make use of the Fjords to construct lots of pumped storage for the German renewables.
