Midland, Texas has received less than 1/10 of an inch of rain since October and both of its reservoirs are almost dry — not low — DRY; however, the city waited to impose watering restrictions until last month and these restrictions still allow watering three times a week and no penalties are given for violators. When I was in Midland 3 weeks ago, a hot sunny afternoon was cooled only by all the sprinklers that were on full force. The utilities manager for Midland was quoted as saying “People in Midland want a certain quality in their life,” Mr. Purvis said. “They don’t want to live in Midland, work in the oil fields and have no greenery.” Are we really so attached to our lawns that we can continue ignore the obvious?
