River Thames on the up as water quality improves Water quality in the River Thames area has improved over the past year, according to Environment Agency figures. A report showing a resurgence in otter numbers, and the recent success for the River Thames in an international river award, are just two examples of how improved water quality is having a positive environmental impact. These are backed up by figures published by the Environment Agency on Friday for its classification of rivers under tougher new standards set out under the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). Earlier this month the Environment Agency and its partners were awarded the International Theiss River Prize after submitting the River Thames as an entry.
