Conflict in Gaza Has Severely Affected Its Zoo Animals

The situation at Gaza’s South Jungle Zoo has become so desperate that zoo owner Mohammed Ouida says his only choices are to wait for someone to buy the zoo for him, or for all the animals to die . Ouida estimated that his African tiger had not eaten in four to five days. In American dollars, it costs approximately $20 a day to feed Ouida’s tiger. There was, however, once a time where Ouida was able to keep his animals properly fed. When the zoo opened, he had 30 employees. The number is now down to two. Care for the zoo animals took a horrific turn in July 2014, when conflict broke out between Israel and Hamas, a Palestinian Islamic organization that has governed Gaza since 2007.
