Why Nick Clegg's one-off wealth tax does not go far enough

Taxing wealth is plain good economics. Having such stores of wealth mean that money is not being put to productive use, as is clear from the trillions being hidden in tax havens; adds to vastly unequal starting points in life resulting in wasted talent; has been linked to asset bubbles and financial transactions associated with the 2007 financial crash; biases our democratic system towards the wants and needs of the rich (see Joe Stiglitz’s new book ) and creates economic fault lines within and between communities.
