Americans waste 40 percent of the country's annual food supply, according to @NRDC:

My friends and I often discuss the issues of cost, health and food waste in diners and restaurants at all but the costliest outlets. Very expensive restaurants seldom give you more than you can eat (except for those absurd baked potatoes) or else offer items such as steaks in several portion sizes. They provide minimal accompaniments, so you may choose side dishes or pass them by. We don't understand why more reasonably priced locations do not do the same. We would all enjoy eating out more often, but are tired of paying for food we don't want to eat that will end up in a landfill- at a table of four women, as least three are concerned about their weight - LOL. We are usually choosing items that don't leave over well, so we don't take them home. Even if we refuse the free soup, potato or dessert, the kitchen has already prepared enough for everyone they anticipate for dinn...
