What the leading edge of agtech means for Big Food

Brad McNamara knows that spicy kale raised in a shipping container rigged with hydroponic growing systems isn't exactly the norm for food giants catering to the masses. Still, he thinks there is a way for his Massachusetts-based urban farming startup, Freight Farms , to find common ground with incumbent food companies rushing to make sense of the current boom in agriculture tech . "From the big business side, a lot of them are calling it their test kitchen," McNamara, co-founder of Freight Farms, told GreenBiz. The five-year-old company with just shy of $5 million in funding still targets small-scale urban farmers and experimental restaurateurs. But Freight Farms also has found some success selling its "Leafy Green Machine" container farming systems to bigger food wholesalers and managers of university or corporate campus food programs.
