When our nearest neighbors in Maine (two miles away) saw us for the first time after the winter, they said, “Oh, you’re still here.” I wasn’t sure if it was a statement or a question, but I was sure that many doubted our ability to cope with the shift from a suburban New Jersey life to an off-the-grid cabin in the woods of Maine for a year . The year is almost over, and parts of it were definitely hard. Perhaps the hardest day for me was in the middle of winter when Susannah’s father, mother and sister were visiting us. We’d brought them in by snowmobile because the snow was too deep for our four-wheel-drive Jeep. It was a Sunday, it was cold out, there were eight people in the cabin, and our one toilet had been plugged up since the night before. Calling a plumber was not an option. A rubber plunger and a plumbing auger made no difference. I pulled the drain clean-out cove...
