For several years in the middle of the last decade, a group of eminent climate scientists fell under the patronage of a billionaire philanthropist named Gary Comer , who turned his luxury yacht into a scientific platform for exploring the Arctic. Spending Mr. Comer’s money and riding in planes and helicopters that he procured, the researchers managed in just a few years to turn up intriguing new evidence about the potential for abrupt climate change.
