Earth Day Approved: With Good Planning, Ocean Renewable Energy Has Great Potential

On Earth Day, it’s important to think happy thoughts -- to build resolve and bolster spirits by reflecting on progress and positive opportunities for environmental improvement and protection. This can be hard when there’s plenty of discouraging news (for example, Congress has failed to pass oil spill response legislation and is instead trying to force more drilling in areas like the Alaskan Arctic and off the West Coast), but I am heartened by the clean energy generation potential of carefully planned offshore renewable energy. A recent National Renewable Energy Laboratory report discusses estimates that the U.S. could harvest 54 gigawatts (GW), from offshore wind by 2030. “Building 54 GW of offshore wind energy facilities would generate an estimated $200 billion in new economic activity and create more than 20 direct jobs for every megawatt produced in the United States.”...
