Unlike the group at the right, the lone bat is not infected with white nose syndrome. Just a few years ago, little brown bats were one of the most common types of bats in North America. They could be found hibernating together in huge aggregations during the winter months, carpeting the stony roofs of mines and caverns with their tightly knit furry bodies. Today, however, the North American population of little brown bats is in a shambles because of white nose syndrome , a highly contagious fungus that was first seen on bats in a New York cave network in 2006.
